The breed was established a standard in the 18th century, after crossing several northern spitz types to create a larger dog.
The first dog to be registered was a male called Kilimanjaro.
The northern type of Jaro is the original while the southern was established in the 19th century by crossing Jaros with Eurasian wolves and eventually Czechoslovakian wolfdogs.
Both types have a strong hunting and protection drive. Because of their fearless nature, they are often used in hunting big game such as moose and bear.
Some dogs however are born with a milder drive to hunt, and instead excell in herding.Anatomy
